Governor’s Derby Celebration Poster

The 2011 Governor’s Commemorative Derby Poster is the fourth in the series issued by Governor and Mrs. Beshear which pays tribute to a Kentucky Derby winner that went on to become a Triple Crown champion – thereby joining the most elite company in all of thoroughbred racing. This year’s poster features Seattle Slew on the 34th anniversary of his successful ‘Run for the Roses.’ The photograph, owned by Churchill Downs, Inc., and Kinetic Corporation, captures the moment Seattle Slew galloped into racing history as he crosses the finish line first in the 103rd Kentucky Derby on May 7, 1977, with jockey Jean Cruguet in the saddle.

Bred in Kentucky at White Horse Acres Farm near Lexington and owned by Karen and Mickey Taylor, Seattle Slew became one of the most celebrated thoroughbreds in history, winning the Eclipse Award for the top three-year-old colt in North America as well as Horse of the Year. In addition to winning the three jewels of racing’s triple crown, Seattle Slew also won such prestigious races as the Wood Memorial, Marlboro Cup, and both the Woodward Stakes and Flamingo Stakes. To date, Seattle Slew is the only thoroughbred in history to have won the triple crown as an undefeated contender.

The 2011 Governor’s Derby Poster also features an image of the trophy that is awarded to the winner of the Kentucky Derby. The design of the Kentucky Derby trophy is a registered copyright of Churchill Downs, Inc.

A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the 2011 poster will benefit First Lady Jane Beshear’s Horses and Hope program and the Equine Health and Welfare Alliance, Inc. Horses and Hope provides breast cancer education, awareness, screening and treatment referral to uninsured and underinsured employees of Kentucky’s equine industry. Also benefitting from sales of the 2011 poster is the Equine Health and Welfare Alliance, Inc, which directly supports efforts addressing equine health and safety in Kentucky.

For thirty years, Governors have issued commemorative posters in celebration of the running of the Kentucky Derby. The 2011 edition is available for sale at the Governor’s Derby Day Celebration.
